Recent research has shown that almost a quarter of engaged couples are planning on including their pet dog in their wedding day plans and Google has noted a 200% increase in searches for the sentence “pets at weddings”. Here at Briar House Barns we have had several couples ask us whether we allow dogs on the grounds, so we thought that it would be helpful to couples to set out our thoughts and to give some tips for those considering having their four legged friends present on their big day.
It is absolutely possible to include your dog in your wedding celebrations here at Briar House Barns, but there are some things that you should consider before ordering their cute bowtie. Firstly, it is highly likely that when you think about including your dog in your wedding day, you are planning to have them with you during the ceremony, either to walk with you down the aisle or maybe to act as the ring bearer. It this is the case, then you will need to have a dedicated person who can be responsible for your dog while you are busy with the ceremony, signing the register and having your photographs taken. This could be someone from your bridal party, but if you think that your dog may need to be taken out of the ceremony and your trusted friend or family member does not want to miss anything, you could consider employing a dedicated dog chaperone. Some professional dog walkers also offer a wedding service if required. Be mindful, however that this person needs to be someone that your dog knows and is comfortable with.
You will also need to ensure that your dog is fed and watered, particularly if the weather is hot and you are outside for a lot of your wedding day. In addition, you will need to make sure that your pet is walked or has time during the day in a safe area to run around and have some exercise. It would be advisable to enquire with your venue in advance to check they have a space available and whether they have somewhere that your dog can have some quiet time away from the celebrations if necessary. It would also be prudent to take your pet to the venue in advance of the day, just to check that there is nothing that might trigger them, such as loud noises, other animals or a busy road nearby.
Finally, don’t forget to consider your other guests. Could there be anyone with a bad allergy to dogs or someone who is scared by them? Not only that, but you will also need to make sure that your dog is safe and not near any flowers or foliage that could be poisonous to them or be tempted by any of the wedding food that could be toxic to dogs.
Here at Briar House Barns, we are a dog friendly venue and love nothing more than having your furry friend take part in your big day. We know that your four-legged friend is part of your family, which is why we have no problem in allowing them at the venue. We offer easy access to the fields and grounds on the estate and even have some kennels if your dog needs a bit of rest after their big moment! We do make a small charge of £20 per dog for them to attend on the day, but ask that you let us know their name and breed on booking so that we can provide them with a personalised welcome.
